Congratulations to Pati and James Herndon and their boy Woody – our June Homeward Bound Pet Family of the Month!Longtime Oxford residents, Pati and James are also longtime lovers of West Highland White Terriers, having shared their home with Westie family members for the last fifteen years or so. James is just a wee bit fond of single malt scotches, and you may recognize a bit of Scotland in the names they proudly bestowed upon their Westie canine clan members: Sir Macallan of Speyside (Mac), Master Oban the Highlander (Obie), and Lady Talisker of the Isle of Skye (Tali). Sadly, this royally named trio are now gone but their spirits live on in the latest arrival: a handsome rescue who answers to Woody, Woodrow, Woodruff and the decidedly non-royal sounding (and not the least bit Scottish) Woodymeister.Woody, now living in Westie heaven-on-earth with the Herndons, had less than an ideal start in life. His first home was with a well-intentioned woman that had to keep him confined in a crate most of the time, which is no fun for an off-the-charts smart puppy. He was ‘rescued’ from the crate by a dog-loving family with eight dogs, where he simply could not get the pampering attention a boy needs. Finally, Woody was re-rescued by the Westie Rescue League of Tennessee and after a few months with a loving foster mom was paired with the Herndons.James and Pati, along with then reigning lady of the house Tali, headed to the Nashville area to pick up Woody earlier this year. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight for Miss Tali; the car ride home and the first night in Oxford was a bit bumpy for all. The words ‘hyper’ and ‘schizoid’ came to mind when the family recalled the story of Woody’s first days with the family.Today, the very handsome Woody (his photo appears in marketing for the Westie Rescue League of Tennessee), has earned his own special place in the family while seeming to channel the best of his predecessors … he comically displays the same goofiness as Obie, the affection of Mac, and he ‘talks’ just like dear Tali. We are so thrilled to have the continued privileged of being a part of this family as we become more and more acquainted with Mr. Woody! In loving memory of Mac, Obie and Tali Herndon
