Meet the Hughes family – Jay, Cris, Patricia and Sadie! Jay and Cris met while Jay was completing his last semester at the University of Mississippi Law School and Cris her junior year as an undergrad. They married shortly after Cris graduated and started their active life together. These days their daughter Patricia, fifteen, is a freshman at Oxford High School and the family is very active in the community. Jay is involved in a wide variety of business ventures including restaurants and property development and is currently serving as the State Representative for House District 12. Jay and Patricia began visit the puppies at the Oxford Lafayette Humane Society together about 5 years ago looking for a 4-legged addition to the family. In the spring of 2012, they met Sadie, an assumed Beagle/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. The runt of a litter of pups who were abandoned on the side of the road and left in a bag, she was the only remaining puppy still at the shelter waiting for a family to pick her. A rough start to a life now filled with constant joy. She is doted on and loved by her family every day. This sweet girl is blessed with the best of two worlds. City girl during the week and country girl at the family farm on the weekends. Weekends at the farm are a blast for Sadie as she gets to play her favorite game; I-SPY – livestock edition! She takes every opportunity to stretch her legs and run freely chasing deer, geese and turkeys. She even learned a valuable lesson about the nature of snapping turtles and has the battle scar to prove it. City-life is just fun for Sadie with a different pace. Each in-town day begins with her “Greenie” and a well mapped, leisurely, counter-clockwise morning walk followed by some quality time with her three stuffed dragons that she protects and mothers like “babies”.
The Hughes family took a chance on this once abandoned shelter pup and now can’t imagine life without her. A testament to how adoption changes lives. We are privileged to share this happy story and have the Hughes’ as our May Pet Family of the Month!
