January opens a new door to the future, but still keeps an eye on the past. In this new and hopefully improved year, we are happy to feature The Magee family, as our first pet family of the month in 2021. The Magee family includes: David, Kent, Hudson, Mary Halley and late son, William. They are also grandparents to two wonderful children and another on the way. And last but never least, their two Cavalier King Charles babies, Beatrice (Bea) and Millicent (Milly).
David is an Oxford original, while Kent is a transplant from Arkansas. They met in their first week of college here at the University of Mississippi, and they have been inseparable ever since. Kent was a successful entrepreneur of two separate fashion boutiques; one in Chattanooga and the other in Oxford; which have both since sold. Kent has since changed directions and now teaches yoga. Her husband, David, is an author of 12 books, with another memoir currently in the works. In their 32 years of marriage, most of it has been spent in Oxford, with exception for the 13 years they lived in Chattanooga and Birmingham. In 2016, the Magee’s moved home for good, while their children all attended Ole Miss in the like manner of their parents. When they got their first family pet and CKC, Lady, their eldest son also made his way back to the nest from Chattanooga. William jokingly said that they had “replaced him with a dog”. Given she was a King Charles, which was bred to be lap dogs of British royalty, the name Lady seemed like a pawfect fit. Eventually, the family felt it was time that their dame have a companion. In October 2015, they adopted Bea. Lady and Bea were the best of friends, and lived a life like true aristocrats. However, in the summer of 2018, Lady passed away, and Bea truly lost her soulmate.
Knowing that Cavaliers are companion dogs, the family adopted Milly that fall. These two girls are very different from one another. Although neither like when other dogs or squirrels cross their yards, they differ in their habits at home. Bea likes to watch TV so she can keep an eye out for other dogs, when she spots one she dashes to the screen and jumps up and down trying to catch it! Meanwhile, Milly does not care for the chase and uses this time for napping. However, they both enjoy being in someone’s lap at any given moment and stretching out in the sun for their daily dose of Vitamin D. Milly and Bea are also no strangers to family vacations at Alys Beach. They race through the sand and have even made their very own friends on the Florida coast. They are both extremely loving and darling girls, and have been very patient with the grandbabies ‘hugs and tugs’. When these princesses come to get their beauty needs fulfilled, the entire Spaw staff loves to greet them as their happy tails come wagging through the door. We thank the Magee family for sharing these royal gals with us through the years. Wishing you and your families the happiest of New Years!
